Pet Shop Boys rework their Alan Turing Proms piece into an album

A Man From the Future, first played at the Royal Albert Hall in 2014, arrives October 9 as an eight-track record with an octet in place of an orchestra.

Pet Shop Boys have reworked and rerecorded A Man From the Future, their 2014 BBC Proms composition about Alan Turing, into an eight-track album out October 9. The piece, a collaboration with Turing biographer Andrew Hodges, was written in 2012 and first performed at the Royal Albert Hall.

The new version steps away from that room, the announcement says. The orchestra becomes an octet with more electronic elements, and the running order follows chapters of Turing's life: school days, the Enigma work, the computer, the trial for gross indecency, the suicide.

'Natural Wonders Every Child Should Know' opens the record with Morse beeps, piano, strings and a boys' choir. Chris Lowe contributes the second and third compositions. Juliet Stevenson and Gordon Brown appear on the release, while Neil Tennant mostly stays out of the way, singing a few choruses.

The record is the tighter, album-shaped telling of a story the Proms version could only stage once.
