Saul Williams returns with new album and book

The poet and musician announces 'Leap Life', his first solo LP in seven years, alongside a new book.

Saul Williams will release 'Leap Life' on Big Dada on 28 August, his first full-length solo work in seven years. A book, 'Songs My Mother Taught Me: Why the Artist Must Take Sides', follows on 8 September via Haymarket Books.

The record arrives after recent shows with Underground Resistance, who remixed a work of his, and a tour with Carlos Niño. Williams says his older work remains dishearteningly relevant: "I would have hoped that some of the work I had done previously would have aged out, belonged to another world. Instead, when I reencounter some of my older work it’s sad to see how relevant it is to today."

He describes the new album as addressing the present moment: "I am deeply disappointed, grieving, angry, I don’t feel good about where we are and what is happening, but I feel like the energy invested in this album... allows me to promote it knowing that I am not distracting."

'Leap Life' is out 28 August, and the book on 8 September.
