Beyoncé's B'Day at 20: the Spanish tracks are the argument

Beyoncé's B'Day turns twenty with a 31-track deluxe edition released September 4, 2026, which is also her birthday. The songs that justify it sit at the end: Spanish-language versions of the 2006 material, two of them new, one a mashup of "Irreemplazable" with Selena's 1995 hit "Como La Flor." The other twenty-nine tracks are a reprint. The box they come in costs $948.01.

B'Day landed on September 1, 2006, on Columbia, Music World Entertainment and Sony Urban Music. It was the second solo album, after Dangerously in Love, recorded at Sony Music Studios in roughly two weeks that April, once Beyoncé had finished filming Dreamgirls. Darkchild, Nellee Hooper, Ne-Yo, The Neptunes, Stargate and Swizz Beatz are in the credits, Jay-Z guests twice, and most of it was tracked with live instruments. It won Best Contemporary R&B Album at the 2007 Grammys and had sold more than eight million copies worldwide by 2013. The singles did the rest: "Déjà Vu" reached number four on the Hot 100, "Ring the Alarm" stopped at 11, "Irreplaceable" went to number one, and the deluxe cut "Beautiful Liar" got to number three. The records after it, from I Am… Sasha Fierce to COWBOY CARTER, keep circling its split between live-band funk and pop performance.

This edition exists because Selena Quintanilla's estate cleared "Como La Flor." Beyoncé has said she listened to Selena constantly as a kid and met her once at the Galleria Mall, and she has worked this seam before: a year after B'Day she released the Irreemplazable EP, Spanish re-recordings and remixes pulled from the same album. The new tracks here are "Cuerpo Tumbao (Get Me Bodied)" with Maluma and the Selena mashup, alongside Spanish-language takes on "Listen" and "Beautiful Liar." The mashup also lands into a family fight: Selena's brother A.B. Quintanilla III is suing her sister Suzette and their mother Marcella, who say Suzette was never served and deny any theft.

The 2006 album still holds. Funk from the 1970s and 1980s, ballads, hip hop and R&B underneath, live players across most of it, lyrics shaped by her role in Dreamgirls. "Déjà Vu" opens with Jay-Z on the way to number four. "Ring the Alarm" was her highest-debuting single at the time, until it stalled at 11 and broke a run of top tens. "Irreplaceable" went to number one and stayed the one everybody can sing. "Get Me Bodied" was a US-only single and never matched the ones around it. "Green Light" went out internationally and did not fare better. "Beautiful Liar," held for the deluxe edition in 2007, reached number three anyway.

The new half is where the anniversary earns itself. "Cuerpo Tumbao (Get Me Bodied)" puts Maluma on a Spanish rewrite of "Get Me Bodied." "Irreemplazable (Como La Flor)" is the long one, four minutes and 52 seconds, the Spanish "Irreplaceable" folded into Selena's hit, and the only place on the reissue where two careers touch. Around them sit "Amor Gitano," "Listen (Oye)," "Beautiful Liar (Bello Embustero)," a Timbaland remix of "Get Me Bodied" with Voltio, and a norteña pass at "Irreemplazable."

This is for the people who wore out B'Day in 2006, and for anyone who arrived through RENAISSANCE or COWBOY CARTER and wants the earlier, harder record. If you came for the Spanish material, it earns the trip; the Selena mashup alone is worth the twenty minutes. If you came for a remaster with context, the release does not offer much beyond the album itself.

The box is the problem. $948.01, plus roughly $130 in tax and shipping, four per BeyHive member, for a wooden case around songs that have circulated for twenty years. The sequencing is worse. Thirty-one tracks in one file means the long "Get Me Bodied" extended mix arrives before the Spanish suite, so the new material sits behind a remix of the thing you heard on the way in. Most of this is not new, and the price is not paying for the songs.

The Spanish songs are worth having and the Selena mashup is worth the whole exercise. Everything else is a reprint with a price tag. A 3.5: good songs, a cheap idea in expensive wood.
