Bondo: patience becomes structure on a self-titled third album

Bondo's third album is a restoration project with its references printed on the case. The LA quartet's self-titled record revives the glacial, improvisatory spirit of '90s slowcore and post-rock. Aquarium Drunkard names Codeine, early Mogwai, and Tortoise as the coordinates. That claim is visible in the structure before anyone hits play. Eleven tracks run just over 36 minutes, and the announcement flags patient ensemble improvisations. The five-minute “On The Cross,” “While My Guitar Gently Peaks,” and “Zuma” stand beside a 1:22 “Brian Screams” and a 1:07 “Robby's Song.” Patience, here, is also a playlist architecture.

What works is the confidence of that architecture. The record is described as knotty and menacing, with melodic turns that arrive unexpectedly, which is a fair summary of a tracklist that puts “While My Guitar Gently Peaks” right next to “Meta World Peace.” The long cuts carry structural weight, and the fragments sharpen them by contrast. This is the band's third album, so the self-titled choice reads as a direct statement of identity rather than a debut attempt to prove competence.

What does not work is how much of that identity is borrowed. Codeine, early Mogwai, and Tortoise are not subtle background references; they are the cited lineage. From the available material, the band's own angle is hard to distinguish from the touchstones, and the shorter cuts are the hinge. They could be the sharpest part of the record, or they could be a way of avoiding a single patient idea for too long. The evidence leaves both options open. At this stage, Bondo reads like an expert restoration, and the open question is whether the reconstruction becomes a band sound or stays a genre exercise.

At 36 minutes, Bondo makes a clean structural case for slowcore and post-rock as a living language. The record is good, deliberate, and a little too easy to describe in someone else's words. That is the difference between a strong homage and a finished identity: 3.5.
