Carly Rae Jepsen: the double album that earns the night

Twenty four tracks, twelve played by a live band for the day and twelve built on synths for the night: the first Carly Rae Jepsen record that has to answer for its own length.

Day and Night is the first Carly Rae Jepsen album that has to answer for its size. Twenty four tracks, twelve for the day and twelve for the night, spread across two discs that do not sound like each other: live instrumentation and a 1970s psychedelic pop bent on the first, synths and a dark room on the second. Twenty four tracks is a lot to ask of anyone, and she pays it back.

The career behind it explains the scale. Third place on Canadian Idol in 2007, a folk-leaning debut called Tug of War the year after, then "Call Me Maybe" in 2012, a single that sold more than 18 million copies and reset what she was allowed to do next. Kiss landed that same year. Emotion arrived in 2015 and became the record her audience measures everything against. Dedicated came in 2019 and shipped with a Side B a year later, a habit she kept for The Loneliest Time in 2022 and The Loveliest Time in 2023, the album and then the extra songs, released apart, with a collection pulling both together in 2026. Three Junos, a twelve week run as Cinderella on Broadway in 2014, and a following that treats a good chorus as a serious thing.

Day and Night came out on September 18, 2026, through Schoolboy and Interscope, announced in June. Twelve tracks are day, twelve are night. She recorded it with Tavish Crowe, Kyle Shearer, Nate Cyphert, Noonie Bao, Patrik Berger, Markus Krunegård, Pontus Winnberg and her husband, Cole M.G.N. Before the announcement she was posting photographs of artifacts with locations, dates and times attached, and lines that read like lyrics waiting for a song.

The Day disc is the one that takes nerve. "After All" opens it and was the second single, which puts a hook at the front of the gentler half. "Versailles" sits third, the only track here with a video. "On Wires", the lead single, arrives fourth. That is half the album's singles spent before the first disc is through, which leaves the rest of Day to stand on its playing and its titles: "Habits of Creatures", "Blue Skies", "Burning Heart", and the closer, "Just a Little Walk on the Moon".

Night turns the lights down and the tempo up. "Never Let a Good Thing Die" opens the second disc, with "Amalfi Coast" and "Patience Power Passion" carrying the run into "Don't Leave Me on the Dance Floor" and "Motivation", the other two singles, placed back to back at the middle of the half. That pairing is the record's centre of gravity. The final side, "Near or Far" through "Super Sage", is the slow walk home.

End to end, the two halves do what the title promises: the day keeps a glow going long enough that the switch to night feels like weather rather than a change of album. The dance tracks are not the day songs with the lights off, and the day songs are not the night songs with a guitar laid over them. The day dissolves into the night, and the night runs long enough to become a morning.

It is for anyone who has kept Emotion or Dedicated in rotation and knows the shape of her choruses: a verse that sets a scene, a payoff that arrives clean. It is also for the crowd that wants the dance half to be the whole album. The rooms match the ambition now. The 2027 North American tour runs through April and May with 24 shows, opening and closing in Canada, with a night each at Madison Square Garden and Red Rocks. Her only previous time at the Garden was in November 2012, opening for Justin Bieber. Before this, her last New York headline show was a 3,500-capacity rooftop.

The length is the one thing that does not work, and it is specific: from "Hold Me to the Light" to the end, Night keeps going after it has made its point. A single-disc edit that stopped there would lose nothing, and the double is the only reason those last three tracks exist.

Everything before that earns the extra room. The day songs have grain, the night songs have a pulse, and the split gives her two ways of writing the chorus she has been circling since Dedicated. Play it in one sitting once. Then never in the same order twice.
