fanclubwallet's Creep-O: a Halloween sketch that sticks

Hannah Judge's Ottawa project returns with a two-minute garage-pop sketch about someone who makes your skin crawl. It was made in one sitting, and sounds like it.

Creep-O is a two-minute garage-pop sketch that makes discomfort sound like a hook. fanclubwallet, the Ottawa project led by Hannah Judge, doesn't dress the unease up; she whispers it into the microphone and lets the room stay quiet.

Judge has two albums out, You Have Got to Be Kidding Me and last year's Living While Dying, plus three EPs and the one-off single Moving Unison. She draws cartoons and has been around Ottawa's scene a long time. Creep-O carries on her Halloween tradition.

“This song was created in basically one sitting. A feeling of weirdness was stuck with me, and I just had to get it out as quick as possible.”
HANNAH JUDGE, ON MAKING 'CREEP-O'

The track came together in one sitting, Judge says. She whispered the lyrics into a microphone while collaborator Michael (Miki) Watson worked at the computer. It sat unreleased for several years before she revived the tradition. It's out on Lauren Records.

The sound is muted garage-pop, the vocal close and low. It belongs with her earlier Halloween cuts, double down and Roadkill, and with the same-day demo Pickles N Greens, which landed on a climate justice benefit compilation. It takes cues from Blood Orange, Memo Boy and Sneaks, and shares their reluctance to fill every space.

It's for anyone who has spent a party talking to someone who makes the room feel wrong. Fans of her earlier records will recognize the hush. If you want a chorus that opens up, look elsewhere.

The flaw is that the sketch stays a sketch. At 2:03 it never develops the suspicion past a passing unease. The whispered vocal is the point, and it also holds the song at arm's length. You leave with a feeling and no melody.

At 3.5, Creep-O is a good single with a clear job: a Halloween card from someone who knows how to make discomfort catch. It won't change your year. It makes the next two minutes feel a little off, and that's what it's after.
