George FitzGerald: The Ladder earns its slow climb
A one-track Domino single that turns early-2000s dance into a patient, proggy build.

It started in a session with Ghost Culture near Glastonbury and was finished at FitzGerald's studio in south-east London. Two places fed into it; one room tightened it.
FitzGerald's own description is the clearest guide: "There's an arc to it: it builds slowly to an emotional high and doesn't immediately show you its hand." The track draws from early-2000s dance music and the proggy sounds of that period, and the restraint is structural, not decorative.

The risk is that restraint. If you want the hook in the first minute, The Ladder will frustrate you. But the payoff is earned, and the 4:09 runtime is why this is a four, not a three: the record names its own arc and completes it. It follows 2024's "Gild", "Incomplete Dreaming" and "Gleams" and continues a careful run.
