Live, Vol. Three gives mewithoutYou's road years a proper object

A 17-track live collage from 2019-2022 tours, with a vinyl package that treats the band's catalog like something worth keeping.

Live, Vol. Three isn’t a starting point. It’s a payoff for those who’ve already put years into this band, and that’s a proper role for a live album. Documented on the road from 2019 to 2022, these shows were captured and mixed by Michael Lane, with mastering by Hans DeKline. The playlist mirrors a full concert: 17 songs spanning ‘Torches Together’ to ‘The Cure for Pain,’ plus space for a one-minute ‘Brownish Spider’ and a ‘Rainbow Signs’ stretching beyond six minutes.

A live album this audience-oriented must be giving, and this one certainly is. The song order flows like a concert rather than a greatest-hits collection, and it relies on the listeners to keep up. 'Wolf Am I (And Shadow)' lasts less than three minutes. 'In a Sweater Poorly Knit' is nearly twice that long. 'The King Beetle on a Coconut Estate' approaches six. You don't have to know the group's catalog to sense the breadth, though you'll gain extra value from this record if you're familiar.

The vulnerable point is context. The record is compiled from concerts spanning multiple seasons, yet no song-by-song source data is revealed, so it remains uncertain which evening yielded which take. The tangible release receives genuine attention: compact disc and tape debut in September 2026, whereas the 180g two-record set with a pictorial narrative waits until 2027. That separation makes the vinyl a sought-after item, which matches the endeavor’s ethos, though it challenges those who only desire the audio.

Is it a 3 or a 4? A 3 would be a live record that serves as catalogue filler. This one reaches higher. It gathers 17 live songs, arranges them in a deliberate order and a substantial physical edition, and invites the fan to regard the collection as an item worth awaiting. It won’t win over newcomers, nor does it need to. Live, Vol. Three is meant for the crowd that already knows every lyric, and it treats that crowd with care.
