Sex Week turn a Logic accident into a hoedown
The New York duo stack wooden recorders, accordions and 808s on their new single, then let the whole thing fall apart. Out now via Grand Jury.

Sex Week, a duo from New York, begin with something near a country shuffle and then devote the remainder of the track to dismantling it: wooden recorders, accordions, 808s, plus a quantised horse sample that shows up like an unexplained joke.
They’ve earned that mess. Recent shows had them supporting Mitski and Fcukers, and they’re out with Cardinals now, at Bowery Ballroom tonight before Philadelphia and Washington, DC. A London headline gig at Club Cheek is scheduled for 10 November.

The single arrives through Grand Jury, issued 14 September, accompanied by a self-directed video. The horse emerged from a Logic experiment; the recorders and accordions were added deliberately. Richard Orofino describes the session as cathartic. Pearl Amanda Dickson describes the track as 'the cornerstone of our musical palette.'
What you get is a meta-hoedown breaking down into a chaos of influences, with punk indifference replacing structure. The accordion and the recorders hold the melody as the 808s lie beneath, overly loud, and the horse just keeps running. It ends up close to Cat Power's unfinished edges and the Grease soundtrack's urge for a chorus, without the neatness of either.
The problem lies in the second half. When the track decides to fall apart, it quits giving you anything to grasp, and at 3:45 that's a long stretch to see the same joke land twice. The melody in the first minute earned a stronger finish.
Three and a half, then. One track more compelling than most groups' full LPs and less polished than it ought to be.
