Yung Miami: a debut built around the one that already worked

Her first solo album has 21 tracks and nine billed guests, plus two remixes of the single that made her a Top 20 artist on her own.

Watch Dis is a debut solo album with 21 tracks and one proven asset, and it knows which one. 'Spend Dat' lands fourth, then comes back twice at the end. Everything in between is Yung Miami working out what she is without JT beside her, and the answer she keeps landing on is a host: someone at her best with company in the room. That is a real skill, though it is a different skill from making an album that stands up without the guest list.

City Girls ended in 2023, after more than six years and a third album, RAW. She had carried the group once already, holding it for nearly two years after JT went to prison in 2018 for aggravated identity theft. What she built next was Caresha Please: two seasons on Revolt TV, wrapped in 2024, Best Hip Hop Platform at the BET Hip Hop Awards two years running. The podcast explains the record's manners. She asks questions for a living now, and she has learned to leave room for an answer.

“I just feel like people always saying that I don't deserve stuff. I work hard, I deserve everything. When I just did my first live podcast, we in a new time, we in a new generation. I'm bringing something new, so how do I not deserve it?”
YUNG MIAMI, ON THE WATCH DIS ROLLOUT

Watch Dis was sold like a season of television. Two scavenger hunts, in Atlanta and in her hometown of Miami, with a USB of two unreleased tracks as the prize. A trailer on September 30 opened on Joe Budden and Akademiks criticizing her by name. Listening events, interviews. 'I'm just outside,' she said of the rollout. 'I'm doing some listening events with fans, a bunch of interviews and just connecting with the people.' The album that came out of all that is 21 tracks: three interludes, an intro, two remixes, and nine billed guests.

It opens on 'Fck Shit Up (Intro)', then runs the two advance singles back to back. 'F You' at two, '2008' at three, both under two and a half minutes. Then the hit arrives. A debut that puts 'Spend Dat' fourth has decided where its value lives, and the rest of the sequencing follows that decision.

'Dade County' is the one guest list that is local rather than booked: Rick Ross, Trina and Trick Daddy, four minutes eight, the longest thing here that is not a remix. It is the only time the guest list is the city she is from. 'TMTC' splits the mic with Quavo and G Herbo, 'Old Time Sake' runs 2:29 with Bryson Tiller, 'Baby' puts Pleasure P three tracks from the end. Three of these get a short piece in front of them, the 28-second 'Put Together (Interlude)' handing off to 'Put Together' at 2:50, the same trick done again for 'Freak Like Me' and 'Letter To My Mwah'. It keeps the middle moving. It also keeps the middle crowded.

'Spend Dat' is the record's whole case, and the case is strong. In July the line about scammers and get-money women, 'This for all my scammers and my get-money bitches', had it argued about online. By the end of the summer it was at weddings, barbecues, graduations, proms and a Knicks championship celebration, and people were building instrumental versions with violins. A hook that survives a string section at a graduation is a hook with its own engine. Nothing else on Watch Dis has a documented life like that, because nothing else here has been out in the world long enough to earn one.

This is for the people who had 'Spend Dat' in the group chat in July, and for the City Girls audience that waited through the split for one of them to go first. It sits easily next to Miami radio rap and it will not embarrass itself at a function. Play it twice if you want a playlist with a personality on it. Skip it if you came for the curiosity of Caresha Please, because that woman is not on these 15 songs. 'Dear JT' arrives at 19, titled after the person she spent six years beside, and then the album hands its own history straight back to the hit.

The flaw is easy to find, and it is not in the songs. The last two tracks are 'Spend Dat' again: the remix with Lil Baby, then the international remix with Davido, Shenseea and Vybz Kartel. Ending a debut on two versions of something from track four is the record telling you where it thinks it peaked. Fifteen songs with nine guests is a record that does not want to be alone in a room.

Three, then, and the number is not a knock on the hit. 'Spend Dat' did what a single is supposed to do, and it did it inside one summer. A debut gets one chance to say who the artist is, though, and this one says it with a guest list, three interludes and two remixes of the song everybody already had. The talent is not in question. The accounting is.
