Bandcamp Daily maps David Murray's catalog, reissues included

Bandcamp Daily published a guide to David Murray's music on September 22, built around two reissues: Live at the Lower Manhattan Ocean Club and the David Murray Quartet's Let the Music Take You. The former is a Jazzwerkstatt reissue of Volume 1 from what was originally a two-LP release on India Navigation. The Quartet record is on Futura Marge.

The gig behind it was cut on New Year's Eve 1977 in Tribeca, with Lester Bowie, Fred Hopkins and Philip Wilson in the band. Murray is the only survivor from that night. Oakland-born and California-raised, he moved to New York in the mid-1970s and folded in fast: a founding member of the World Saxophone Quartet, and the organizer of a little big band with a regular residency at Sweet Basil on Seventh Avenue South.

In the guide, George Grella calls Murray's voice across tenor saxophone and bass clarinet one of the most distinctive in jazz history. No Volume 2 date is announced.
