BY JOLT Staff · Oct 26 2026 · 1 min readThrowing Muses will reissue their self-titled debut for its 40th anniversary. The album, long out of print, is due December 11 on 4AD. It was originally released in 1986.
The band was still in its teens when the record came out. Vocalist Kristin Hersh, guitarist and vocalist Tanya Donelly, bassist Leslie Langston and drummer David Narcizo made it, and much of it drew from a car accident that left a 16-year-old Hersh with a rod in her skull. It also has a history attached: Throwing Muses were the first American band 4AD ever signed. They went on to release seven albums and two EPs on the label, most recently 2025's Moonlight Concessions.
Hersh's line on the early material is blunt. "I can't even remember what it was like to hear a song that didn't grab my face and shout at it," she said. "Must've been soothing. But this is electrifying."
The reissue is out December 11 on 4AD.
