Panda Bear & Sonic Boom: A ? of WHEN is a padded second life

A ? of WHEN arrives as a 21-track album via Domino on July 10. The first nine tracks make a compact argument. The set opens with the two-and-a-half-minute Gettin' to the Point and closes with the five-minute Everything's Been Leading to This, and in between Whirlpool, Danger and Livin' in the After give the run real contrast. Then the record stops being a record. Every song returns as a Songbook Instrumental, and three remixes close the file. The listed material matches the Reset Expanded Edition, so this is an expanded edition wearing a new title.

That shape matters because the music itself is not described in any style note. What we can judge is sequence, length and weight. The nine-song version is a complete loop: short opener, middle cuts that run past five minutes, a quick pivot into the final statement. On paper that is a good set. Nothing about the first nine tracks asks for company. Songbook versions duplicate the same run nearly minute for minute, and the David Holmes and Voka Gentle remixes add three more ways into a record that already found two.

The flaw is scale. Nine songs and then nine songbook instrumentals and then three remixes is the structure of a deluxe reissue, not a fresh album, and the release date only deepens the confusion. The listing says 2026; the underlying metadata says 2022. If the point was to move the music forward, the packaging points backward. A 21-track runtime mostly restates the first thirty-eight minutes. That is a lot of patience to ask for a title that arrives with a question mark built in.

What saves it is the core. The nine originals still feel like a complete listen, and the extras can be ignored on the first pass. If you already own Reset, A ? of WHEN has little new to offer. If you do not, stop at track nine, let the set land, and treat the rest as a bonus disk. The question is not whether the songs work. It is why a good nine-song record needed all this luggage.
