Ten years is long enough for a comeback to turn into a memorial. Primate House skip that fate the simple way: the self-titled return, released on their own with no label behind it, sounds like a band that never agreed to stop. Wiry guitars, a rhythm section that pushes, songs that treat three minutes as a ceiling rather than a target.
Self-releasing cuts both ways. Nothing here is sanded down, which suits the songs. Nothing is trimmed by an outside ear either, and a couple of tracks keep talking after the point lands.
The best stretches have the specific energy of people who make records because they still want to. A 4, earned rather than polished. If the next one takes another ten years, circle the date now.
