Reigning Sound: Time Bomb High School keeps its short fuse

The 2002 record gets a Merge remaster, and its 15 songs still run like a school day with no wasted periods.

Time Bomb High School reaches Merge on July 17, 2026 as a remastered edition of Reigning Sound's 2002 album, a 15-song set that runs just under 38 minutes. The track list reads like a yearbook of teen grievances: 'You're Not as Pretty,' 'She's Bored with You,' 'I'd Much Rather Be with the Boys,' 'You're So Strange.' This is not a record that wants to leave space for interpretation. It wants to hand in its note and walk out of class.

The economy is the first strength. 'Straight Shooter' is done in 92 seconds. The title track barely reaches 1:35. 'Reptile Style' is the longest thing here at 3:22, and that is still a contained sprint. Across 15 tracks, the average length sits barely above two and a half minutes, which forces each song to make one point and leave. That structure gives the record its shape: a small dramatic scene, a quick hook, a door slam. The writing supports the format. The characters are drawn with few words: the bored one, the strange one, the dressy one, the boys' group. It is a believable high school caste system, and the record trusts that a title can do the work.

The middle is where the energy bunches. The title track lands as track seven, a 95-second statement of the whole concept, and then the record runs eight more songs. On paper that second half grows repetitive. 'I'm Holding Out' and 'I Don't Know How to Tell You' are close cousins in phrasing, and neither title tells you why it needed its own slot. The remaster suffix comes attached to all 15 track titles, which reads like a spreadsheet with a nervous habit. It is a small wart, but on a record this terse the extra markup feels at odds with the style.

What saves the remaster is the clock. Fifteen fuses, almost all under three minutes, arranged so the short ones hit early and the longest one sits near the end. There is no wandering, no ballad detour, no grand finale. Time Bomb High School is a record that knows exactly when to stop. The bell rings, and you can still feel the bang.
