Andy Ingamells drops first solo album, a decade and a half of live pieces

Vanity Project collects eight works made between 2008 and 2026, out now on Birmingham Record Company.

Andy Ingamells has released Vanity Project, his first solo album, on Birmingham Record Company. The listing gives a release date of October 23. It gathers eight pieces developed live between 2008 and 2026.

Ingamells is the only musician on all but one track. He speaks, sings, plays melodica, pipe organ and more; on 'Music for Helen,' a nod to Laurie Anderson's 'O Superman,' Éilís O'Sullivan plays flute and Roddy O'Keeffe plays trombone. The opener 'Ding' turns 'fun' into 'fun-ding' with a call bell. 'Worse than nothing' spins permutational poetry out of Schwitters, Joyce and Kruchyonykh, the album trading in close readings that double as jokes.

His work lands in a lineage the material names outright: John Cage, Pauline Oliveros and Peter Ablinger. The lines Ingamells exchanges with a text-to-speech voice, 'this is not avant garde' and 'this is worse than nothing,' do not pretend otherwise. The record is out now on Birmingham Record Company.
