BY JOLT Staff · Nov 1 2026 · 1 min readJuan Atkins has died at 64. His representatives Greensmith confirmed the death in a note, saying he was found unresponsive in his hotel room in Mexico City before a planned performance at YuYu Cine Club and was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital.
Atkins was one of the Belleville Three, with Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson, the group credited as the main architects of techno. He also worked as a solo artist and in Cybotron and Borderland, and ran his own labels. His idea of the music was literal about what sound does: "With anything I do, concept is involved, basically it's about sound," he once said. "It's about vibrations and soundwaves."
The records that carry that idea are the ones to play this week: Cybotron's "Clear", Model 500's "No UFOs", the Borderland work with Moritz von Oswald. That body of sound is the statement. The set at YuYu Cine Club does not go ahead.
