Patrick Belaga: Solar Calf makes its case in runtime

Solar Calf is a nine track, 39 minute album on PAN, released July 31, 2026, and the public record is mostly a tracklist. What remains is a list: Axis, Lake, Plotted Graph, Swarm of Lighht, The End Has No End, Tri-meld, Upsurge, whatisthat, Winding through the Labyrinth. Those titles are not much to start from, but they are a shape, and this record trusts that shape.

The strongest evidence is the running order. The End Has No End is 2:18, whatisthat is 2:59, Plotted Graph is 2:52. Then Swarm of Lighht takes 6:32, and Upsurge runs 9:20, almost a quarter of the total 39 minutes. That is a deliberate scale shift. The record places compressed statements beside open space, and the contrast is concrete before any sound is described. If the long centerpiece holds, the structure is the argument. If it does not, the record has nowhere to hide.

What works less well is the lack of context. Solar Calf has a strange title, names that gesture toward systems and paths, and one misspelled track title, but nothing in the public record explains how they connect. It may be deliberate, but the first encounter here is an act of inference. That is fine, and it is also a risk. Restraint can become inaccessibility when no frame is offered.

The misspelling in Swarm of Lighht is small, but it is telling. On an album where the titles are so few and so exact, that extra h reads as residue. It makes the record feel slightly less finished, a paper trail left on the surface. It is the kind of detail that would not matter on a looser record and does matter here.

Upsurge being so long means the album commits to its center. The score is not higher because this is a strong shape, not yet a proven case. The promise is visible in the arithmetic, and the risk is just as visible. Solar Calf is out now, and the first three tracks are a fair deposit.
