BY JOLT Staff · Sep 19 2026 · 1 min readThe Weeknd debuted a new song called "Tokyo" on September 19, 2026 at Japan's Belluna Dome, the opening night of his Asian tour. Japanese singer Yoko Takahashi joined him for the first performance.
The track samples Takahashi's "A Cruel Angel's Thesis," the opening theme for the 1995 anime Neon Genesis Evangelion. After the debut, Takahashi performed the original while The Weeknd jammed along, trading the song back to the room it came from.
It is the second new song he has rolled out this year, following "Rio" in April. In a GQ Hong Kong interview, Abel Tesfaye said he will not retire the Weeknd name: "The Weeknd isn't going anywhere." He went on to call gratitude for his audience overwhelming. "What if I just stopped? ... what a waste all of that inspiration would be."
